The calm before the storm is so intriguing and can be so deceptive to what awaits when given weather advisory . It certainly is advisable to treat these headings with great respect . Pictures we took of Hurricane Ike is an example of the calm before the storm. A quiet calm, so beautiful , yet so eerie as the birds and animals respond to the weather change.
You know something is happening, but when and where it will hit, leaves a pit in your stomach. This is especially so if you have not prepared properly. Neighbors are all busy loading up and driving to other destinations to outrun the danger soon to follow. Stores are filled with people arriving to buy supplies yet empty shelves remain for those who waited too long. Those that are prepared are feverishly nailing boards to windows and doors, securing outdoor furniture they had just used yesterday on a weekend barbecue.
Saws, hammers, drills echo throughout the neighborhood streets. People gathering their animals and
belongings as others walk by for one more glance. Anticipation of the unknown fills the faces of those you know or haven't yet me. Nervous smiles as you nod and wish the best for those that are hunkering down to ride out the storm. We are all equals, our main objectives are to get through the storm safely and return to
our daily lives as normal, hoping the choices you've made and preparations are sufficient to ride out the storm"s fury.
You listen to the radio and television to keep you aware of the evacuation routes. Wondering if your vehicle can outlast the long lines trying to outrun the darkness that will soon be forming in looming clouds.
Needs for water, gas, food supplies, second guessing how long will the batteries last to stay informed, fill our thoughts. Nature controls us as we sit in awe, nothing left to do but wait..Of course!
We think to ourselves, one last stroll before the storm. The calm before the devastation. We are not alone. People linger outside their
doors, a few more seconds of interaction to relax the nerves. Above, all is beautifully painted like no other artist can compare. Such color blends, hues and strokes of painter's genius reminds us we are not alone. Soaking in the brightness and colors yet to have a name. We gaze amazed and reverent to the view of the heavens. Ever so quickly, the whistling of the winds begins to heighten to a roar. Gripping gray masses surround us as we have taken in the beauty too long. Time to go and wait for the heavens to return from the raging darkness and winds that have just begun their fury, lowering and swirling around.
You hurry the little ones inside and you glance back once more as if pleading for mercy. You have your lamps lit, flashlights ready, books for the children to hear to occupy their time and fears. You are now families alone in the universe surviving and taking in all the newscast and updates you can find. Children are starting to be lulled asleep by the brisk howling of the winds, their fears calmed by loving parents, all is well.
Darkness, utter darkness, has arrived. Batteries are all you have to the outside world. You glance down appreciative that the young ones are at peace for a while. You pace back and forth as each adult is glancing nervously outside. Small places of window to catch a glimpse of what awaits them,.waiting for the arrival of the storm's full fury to begin, and never knowing how long it will last. Or, if you all will outlast it's aftermath..
You've done all you can, it is out of your control
and in the hands of the Creator.
